Flashing Lights...

New York consists of two worlds in my opinion, the regular, ordinary people such as myself and the elite who attend grandiose events, galas and the tents at Bryant Park. Last night, I had the chance to have a toe in the “elite” world of fashionistas…remember Baby Steps. So last night I attended the grand opening of the flagship store GANT and it was pure fabulousness in the air. The clothes are classic American apparel with a European flair and I loved it, a little on the pricey side, but there were items that would be worth the splurge.

As my friends and I sipped on Chardonnay and nibbled on Bruschetta, we passed the likes of former ANTM contestant Eugena Washington from Cycle 7…remember her? She’s very skinny, needed a better weave and was eyeing us because we were the only other brown-skinned girls parading through the store. I want to say she was staring extra hard because of my fabulous makeup that my friend Ana did, but that would be just cocky.

I also spotted Mr. Sean Combs current stylist and former Market Editor at Vibe, cutie Derek Roche perusing through the racks of clothes. Seeing Derek (yes we’re friends..in my head), just made me feel like Diddy was actually there, *sigh*…clearly he wasn’t. Lets just say that he was looking for pieces for Diddy.
The men were all impeccably dressed and equally attractive (sans a few), they looked like they walked straight out of a campaign for GANT. The girls were very trendy and fashionable as well. The opening was very chic, fabulous and sooo New York. I loved it! Check out some stills from the Scott Shuman project where he collaboed with GANT consisting of real New Yorkers wearing pieces from GANT. Fabu!

BTW…the African American model, Luke is very handsome in person and maybe had a little too much to drink...LOVES IT! Check out GANT at http://www.gant.com/. Thanks Tiffany & Doug for hooking us up!

So Fabulous!

Rihanna attended the Spirit of Life gala in L.A. last night in a red Monique Lhuillier strapless ensemble from the designers Resort 2009 collection looking fabulous! The R&B diva is absolutely coming into her own as a fashionista, although her coif…not a fan. It was trendsetting and fashion forward when she initially “cut off” or rather removed her extensions and debuted this look to the world, now it seems as though she struggles with it a bit. Not a fan at all! RiRi I know you have a brigade of stylists that can hook you up, if not, I know a few. Other than the hair, I loved the look, especially the little touch of animal print on the belt and muted makeup, 10 in book ladies…10.

Return of the Queen "B"...

So yesterday the fabulousness that is Ms. Carter (aka Beyonce) hit up TRL to do some promo for her upcoming album, I Am. She stepped away from her normal get up of over-the-top wigs, heavy makeup and Mama Tina designs. Yesterday her makeup and hair ... dare I say it….looked natural. I’m absolutely loving the makeup, but I’m a little unsure of the ensemble . The hair, the opaque tights and tutu-esque skirt is not my cup of tea, but hey do what you do B, because I love you regardless. But can I just say this…her boots are INSANE!! I love them, I feel a little bit of a drool coming on…

What do you think?

Time to get it together..

I have not been keeping up my closet due to the economy, as a result of the “recession” I had to take on a second job and I’m tired honey. I never seem to have enough time in the day: gym, work, and then work again and finally…sleep. See? This is why Sugar Cane Closet is a mess and has been getting ignored…this is why! SO to keep track of time and to satisfy my sweet tooth, I decided that I’m going to get a new watch. I mean it would help me keep track of time and most of all….it’s pretty. Ohhh Michael Kors, why do you do this to me?!! Why? I mean it is a necessity and it is a staple item that will be in my sugar coated closet for years, so the BF shouldn’t be too mad when I decide to opt out of our savings contribution for this month…right? It’s not a splurge…it’s practical and will help me with my time management issues, so we’re good.

La mode c'est tout...Fashion is everything

So Fashion Week has come and gone in NYC, it has now traveled overseas to “Gay Pari” (I always wanted to say that) and regardless of the failing economy and potential bailout bills and things, designers are still putting on fabulous productions that are costing them hundreds of thousands of dollars. The show must go on. Once again, my ticket must have gotten lost, oh how I would LOVE to go to Paris to watch the shows, it’s so Devil Wears Prada and Sex in the City….one day my friends, one day. So update my friends…SugarCane Closet will be making a transition in its content and hopefully soon with its look…so be on the lookout and please spread the word.

Fashion goes on regardless of the economy, and in these hard times one must still keep up appearances….even if you only have $5 in your wallet. As stated in one of my previous posts, Fall is here and so is the fashion! Time to put away the sandals (so sad) and button up! Celebs have always set the trend and as a star crazed nation, we idolize and follow them with drool coming out of mouths, from their hair to their purchases and definitely their fashion. So if you want to keep up with the trends of the season, you will always without a doubt see it on your favorite celebs.

To jumpstart the new direction of SugarCane Closet, I decided to start with a classic necessity for every girls closet…the Little Black Dress. In 1926, Coco Chanel revolutionized the dress that was primarily associated with mourning into a fashion staple in every woman’s closet. Rosario Dawson recently rocked a LBD to the Miss Sixty show at the tents at Bryant Park during NYC Fashion Week.

She’s wearing the Miss Sixty Dessert Dress from their Spring '09 collection and by pairing it with a red patent belt, she added a little punch to the classic dress. Her pockets are a little heftier than mine, so here are some wallet friendly versions of her ensemble. ‘Cause we’re in a recession honey!

1. Ralph Lauren Women's Ryder Taffeta Wrap Shirtdress $280.00 Macys 2. Danya Knit Dress W/ Neck Sash $17.80 Forever21 3. Tailored wool Carrie dress $138 Jcrew 4. Isaac Mizrahi for Target® Cap-Sleeve Ponte Dress $39.99 Target

1. Patent Chain Belt $9.80 Forever21 2. Lauren by Ralph Lauren Patent Leather Belt $52.00 Nordstrom 3. Betsey Johnson Women's Wide Patent Belt $40.00 Bloomingdales

1. Theory 'Selma.Patent' peep toe pumps $ 188.76 Bluefly 2. Bandolino Georgina $69.00 Zappos 3. BCBGirls Women's Mary Peep Toe Pump $80.71 Endless 4. Women's Mossimo® Vernice Peep-Toe Pumps $26.99 Target

Throw on a fitted jacket (another Fall Trend) for the office to keep it conservative and then you can either take it off or leave it on for drinks with the girls or an after work or a hot date with your Mcsteamy. Either way its trendy, cute and takes the classic LBD to the next level. So when you are doing your Fall shopping make sure that you pick up a little black dress, it’s a staple item that can be transitioned season to season and it’s a classic. And can I just say please DONT SLEEP on Target!

The Return of the Boot..

Fall is one of my favorite seasons - the Pumpkin Spice Lattes from Starbucks, the beautiful Autumn leaves and of course Fall footwear. With Fall, there are SO many options that one can run to when facing the chill that comes with Fall-oh the suedes, the leathers, the colors...I can't get enough.

Eventhough booties have stolen the spotlight this season, boots are still a classic staple item for any girls closet. Boots are a requirement for Fall right? The thing that I love about this season is that the options in boots are endless, from the heels, the colors, the fabrics and the details such as fringe-which is actually quite big this season, but I wont support...but I applaud those who choose to wear it.

Boots can instantly transform your outfit to fabulous or horrific and I love that because you are always guaranteed to see a few sights in boots in NYC and I love it! New York will be filled with fashionistas striding in fabulous boots this Fall and honey I put five on it that I will use every fiber in my body to be one of them or at least one of the budding fashionistas shadowing them.

And I'm sorry, but can we just take in these Alexander McQueen Button Trim Boots? My mouth waters whenever I see these, I can't take it because I know somewhere, some uber fab fashionista will be strutting down some street in these. If I were to buy these, I would be homeless and living in these. A homeless, Alexander McQueen change solicitor in Penn Station...can you imagine?

But sadly my toes can only dream of such luxurious shoes.

My Season has arrived!

So Fall is here and although I'm not a fan of summer (heat and my hair don't go well together), I'm trying to hold onto every bit of sunshine and piece of heat that I can...I'm not prepared for Fall. I still have a laundry list of things to add to my closet in prep for the season. I procrastinated with my Fall shoe purchases, which I might add is a travesty! I mean I can't hold onto my pewter peep-toe flats any longer, they're so out of season right now and my toes are getting a bit nippy. And it's a tragedy because my mother always told me I had expensive taste...and clearly not the wallet to finance my desires. So when I see a sugary, sweet treat that would scintillate in my closet that's a little out of my range, I tend to wait...and wait..and wait. Finally when I go to purchase, its sold out. Which has been my problem...so pray that in these trying times a girl can give her toes a warm, comfy and stylish home. Because Fall is my season to be fabulous-my coif can bask in its glory, my makeup will stay intact and I can hit the streets of NY without worrying about my dress being blown up Marilyn Monroe style because of cars etc.
